When to Take TMG: Timing, Food and Consistency

There is no proven best time of day to take TMG. Human studies show that it is absorbed quickly, and none of them shows that morning, evening or pre-workout dosing works better for ordinary supplement use. Pick a time you can repeat every day, follow the label of your product, and judge the result over weeks, not hours.

This guide covers what the research says about timing, whether to take TMG with food, how long it takes to work, and how to fit it next to other supplements such as NMN.

TL;DR

  • No study establishes that morning, evening, fasted or pre-workout is the better moment for routine TMG use.
  • Absorption is fast: in one pharmacokinetic study, blood betaine peaked at about 0.90 hours after a dose.
  • Sustained effects on homocysteine were seen in trials with repeated daily intake over weeks, so consistency matters more than the clock.
  • Take TMG with water and follow the label. Food is a practical option if an empty stomach causes discomfort.
  • Anyone on medication, or with kidney, liver or cholesterol concerns, should review dose and timing with a doctor or pharmacist.

What TMG is and why timing is asked about

TMG stands for trimethylglycine. It is also called betaine, and supplement labels and research papers often use the two names for the same compound. It acts as a methyl donor: it helps convert homocysteine back into methionine. One review estimates that food supplies roughly 0.5 to 2 g of betaine a day, while clinical studies have used higher supplemental amounts.

People ask about timing because TMG sits in two worlds. It is used in homocysteine and methylation research, and it is also sold as a sports ingredient and as a companion to NMN. Each use suggests a different schedule, and most online advice states one of them as if it were settled. It is not.

What absorption data tell us

Timing questions start with how fast a compound enters the blood. For TMG, the answer is: quickly.

  • A pharmacokinetic study in healthy people and in patients with homocystinuria reported rapid absorption, with an absorption half-life of about 0.28 hours and peak concentration at about 0.90 hours.
  • The same study reported an elimination half-life of roughly 14 hours, so betaine stays in the body well beyond the first hours after a dose.
  • In a separate acute study, single doses of 3 g and 6 g lowered plasma homocysteine within 2 hours in healthy adults.

Two practical points follow. First, TMG does not need to be taken at a precise minute relative to anything else to be absorbed. Second, a quick biochemical change is not the same as a felt benefit. The trials that measured homocysteine over time used daily dosing for weeks.

Morning or night

The research does not rank morning above evening. The 2024 review in the Journal of Nutrition describes clinical efficacy as unresolved and notes wide variation in the directions printed on commercial products, some advising use before a meal and others at a mealtime.

So the choice comes down to routine:

  • Morning: easy to attach to breakfast, a glass of water or other daily supplements. Many people find a morning habit the one they keep.
  • Evening: suits people who eat their main meal late or who forget supplements early in the day.
  • Split doses: some studies used repeated dosing through the day. That is a study design choice, not a rule for retail products. If your label allows more than one serving, spreading it out can also make the stomach feel easier.

Some websites say morning is best because TMG supports daytime metabolism. That is a reasonable habit suggestion, but the human data we have reviewed do not show an advantage. Treat it as a convenience, not a finding.

With food or on an empty stomach

The studies give less guidance here than people assume. Several trials gave betaine in orange juice, in one case after a 12-hour overnight fast, and measured the acute rise in serum betaine. That shows TMG works in a fasted state. It does not show that orange juice, or fasting, is required.

For a capsule product, a simple approach works:

  1. Take it with a full glass of water.
  2. Follow the serving and timing on the product label.
  3. If you feel nausea or stomach discomfort on an empty stomach, move the dose to a meal.
  4. Keep that pattern for at least a couple of weeks before changing it, so you can tell what causes what.

No food, drink or cofactor pairing has been established as necessary for routine TMG supplementation.

TMG before a workout

TMG is common in pre-workout blends, which is why people search for it that way. The evidence is thin. A systematic review of betaine and muscle strength and power examined its use as an ergogenic aid, and in the summary we have drawn on only 2 of 7 randomised trials reported improvements. A 2024 randomised crossover study in active men found that betaine raised serum betaine but did not change the amino acid profile.

The 2024 narrative review adds that studies reporting ergogenic effects generally used 2 to 5 g of betaine anhydrous for 14 to 21 days. That is a loading pattern over weeks, not a single dose 30 minutes before training.

Study findings and TMG workout timing compared

In short: you can take TMG before training if that fits your day, but there is no good reason to schedule it there for performance. If your goal is training, the weeks of consistent use matter more than the pre-session timing.

How long TMG takes to work

The answer depends on what you measure.

Outcome What the research shows
Serum betaine Rises within about an hour of a dose
Plasma homocysteine, single dose Lower within 2 hours after 3 g or 6 g in healthy adults
Plasma homocysteine, sustained A meta-analysis of five randomised trials with 206 participants found benefit at 4 g/day or more for at least 6 weeks, with maximum results within 4 to 6 weeks
Body weight and composition No effect on body weight, body composition or resting energy expenditure in a study of obese adults
Strength and power Mixed, see above
Energy, vitality, longevity No validated dose or schedule

The meta-analysis found an average homocysteine reduction of 1.23 μmol/L. That figure refers to the studied range of 4 to 6 g a day. It does not translate directly to a retail capsule of 500 mg, so the size of any change from a lower dose is a question for a blood test and a clinician, not a guess.

If you want a deeper look at the homocysteine side, we cover it in our article on TMG and homocysteine levels.

Taking TMG alongside NMN and other supplements

Many of our readers take TMG because they take NMN. The reasoning is that NMN raises NAD+ and its use can draw on methyl groups, and TMG is a methyl donor. We explain that mechanism in TMG and NMN together and in our guide TMG for NMN users.

For timing, the useful point is simple. Nothing in the research we reviewed requires TMG and NMN to be taken at the same minute. Many people take both in the morning because it keeps the routine short. Others take NMN in the morning and TMG with a later meal. Either is fine as long as the pattern is stable.

A few habits make a multi-supplement routine easier to keep:

  • Anchor each product to an existing event: breakfast, coffee, brushing teeth, dinner.
  • Use a weekly pill organiser so that missed doses are visible.
  • Add one product at a time, a week apart. If a headache or stomach upset appears, you will know which product to adjust. Some users report mild headache when starting TMG or raising the dose, which can relate to individual sensitivity and dose.

Dose matters more than the clock

The doses in the headline studies and the doses on a retail label are different things. Published homocysteine trials generally used 4 to 6 g a day for 6 to 24 weeks. A common retail capsule contains far less per unit. Our listed TMG product is 60 capsules of 500 mg.

The 2024 review also reported that doses of at least 4 g a day increased total and LDL cholesterol. So higher-dose use calls for particular attention from anyone who tracks lipids. Timing will not offset that. Our overview of dosing from 500 mg to 4 g sets out how people match a dose to a goal.

A practical routine you can repeat

  1. Read the label. The serving size and any timing directions on your product come first.
  2. Choose one anchor. Breakfast is the most common. A main meal also works.
  3. Take it with water. Use a meal if an empty stomach bothers you.
  4. Keep it for 4 to 6 weeks. The trials that measured sustained effects ran for at least 6 weeks, with maximum results within 4 to 6 weeks in the meta-analysis.
  5. Measure, do not guess. If homocysteine, cholesterol or similar markers are the reason you take TMG, test them before you start and again after a few weeks.
  6. Change one thing at a time. Dose, timing and food should not all move together.

Who should check before settling on a schedule

For adults aged 40 and over, and for caregivers buying for older relatives, timing should not replace an individual review. Speak to a GP or pharmacist if any of these apply:

  • You take regular medication and want to add TMG to the same time slot.
  • You have kidney or liver conditions.
  • Your cholesterol or LDL results are above target, particularly if you plan a dose in the gram range.
  • You are buying for an older person who takes several tablets a day. A pharmacist can help set a daily order that is simple to follow.

The research does not establish a longevity dose or a validated schedule for improving vitality. Expect a modest, measurable effect on homocysteine metabolism at best, not a dramatic change in energy.

Our perspective

We get the timing question often, and the honest answer is less exciting than the marketing around it. The science supports one measurable thing with some confidence: betaine acts on homocysteine, quickly after a dose and more durably with repeated daily intake. It does not support a special hour of the day.

That is why we keep our advice to a short list. Follow the label. Pick a moment you will keep. Give it weeks. Measure what you took it for. We make clinically backed, vegan supplements and assemble them in the Netherlands, and we would rather a customer take a product reliably at 8 a.m. than debate whether 7 or 9 is better.

The 2024 review by Nikrandt and Chmurzynska makes a similar point from the academic side: research on betaine has grown faster than clinical consensus. We read that as a reason to separate a measured effect from broad claims about performance or longevity, and we write our guides that way.

FAQ

Is it better to take TMG in the morning or at night?

Neither has been shown to be better. Human studies show fast absorption and no clock-time advantage for routine use. Choose the time you are most likely to repeat every day, and follow your product label.

Should I take TMG on an empty stomach or with food?

TMG has been given to fasting volunteers in studies, so food is not required. For a capsule, water is enough. If an empty stomach upsets you, take it with a meal instead.

Is TMG a good pre-workout supplement?

The evidence is weak. In a systematic review, only 2 of 7 trials on strength or power reported improvements, and the studies with positive findings used daily dosing over 14 to 21 days. Do not schedule TMG before training expecting an immediate effect.

How long does TMG take to work?

Blood betaine rises within the first hours, and homocysteine can fall within about 2 hours after a large single dose of 3 g or 6 g. For sustained change, trials ran at least 6 weeks, with maximum results within 4 to 6 weeks. Felt changes in energy are not established.

What should TMG be taken with?

Water is sufficient, and no required pairing has been established. Some people take it with NMN or at a meal for convenience. If you take other medicines, ask a pharmacist before putting them in the same time slot.
